The Thames and The Capital Ring
It all went well. It turned out a warmer and sunnier day than
forecast which was good news.
Ten of us turned up at Embankment Pier and enjoyed a lovely boat trip down
to the O2 in the sunshine.
Captial Ring /Green Chain Walk inland all worked well. Some good views and as always
near to the river sometimes surprising in that buildings ie Canary Wharf
appear in the most unlikely directions!
Sadly trees not yet turned. Café worked fine for
lunch. one person took the early departure home and the rest walked on to Eltham
Palace but no one went in. Got to Mottingham Station about 4.40
and trained back to Charing Cross. Everyone enjoyed the day and the chat
along the way!
Embankment Pier. The boat departs at 09.25! Embankment Pier to North Greenwich . Ticket required for Central and East Zone £8.70 single –but discounts are available incl. with a Freedom Pass –at 50%. Buy ticket at Pier or on line in advance at thamesclippers.com
Train Return times
From Falconwood Station to London Bridge (1 change) or Victoria at 18 and 48 minutes past the hour.
From Mottingham Station to London Bridge (fastest) or Victoria (2 changes) at 15 and 52 minutes past the hour.
So far as we can tell there is currently no strike planned for Sunday 18th September!
We shall depart North Greenwich (The 02) at 10.10 walking on the Thames Path towards the Thames Barrier and then join the Capital Ring/Green Chain Walk through local parks, various commons and woodland via Eltham Palace –see below- finishing at Mottingham Station from where return by train to London Bridge.
No convenient pubs on route . ..lunch at the ’Oxleas Wood Café’ pre ordering is not required . Café food including sandwiches, baguettes, soup, burgers etc. or …..for those who prefer….. an opportunity to provide your own sandwich!
Mainly easy walking –though some hills and steps –the worst of which have walk arounds. Good paths through the woods and commons - some urban pavements.
Eltham Palace – an English Heritage House and Garden –originally a Royal Palace and the country residence of the monarchy for 250 years. It is well worth a visit for those who are members …otherwise £14.80 (concessionary rate for the over 65’s). There should be time for a visit at the end of the walk – last entry 16.30 - and it is then only a short walk (I mile) to Mottingham Station.
