About
The London Walking Group was formed in 1967 by a group of keen walkers and has flourished for nearly 50 years. The group has around 40 members; there are usually up to 20 members on each walk. The group is coordinated by Margaret Miles and Jane Cook. The membership secretary is Francis Burbeck.
The Walks:
There are walks on the 3rd Satrurday/Sunday and 1st Friday of the month. Details of the walks are circulated by email and can be seen on the website.
Sundays:
A walk is organized on the third Saturday/Sunday of each month, apart from May and December. Saturday walks are from January to June and Sunday walks July to November We usually meet at a railway station or car park in the countryside around London, within 1 – 2 hours travel from central London at about 9.30 - 10am. If rail travel is not possible, members are encouraged to communicate via the io group e-mail for lift shares. Our walks vary in length from 8-10 miles. We stop for an hour or so for a pub lunch. Members of the group take it in turns to volunteer to lead a walk and make sure the route works, and the pub is satisfactory!
The December Walk is on the second Sunday in December and these walks are usually within Greater London.
The May walk is an away w/e (see later)
Fridays:
We also walk on the first Friday of the month, and have completed the London LOOP, most of the Thames Path, the Lea Valle, some walks in Essex, the Capital Ring and the tributaries of the Thames, and parts the North Downs Way These walks are often linear, not “reccied” but so far we have not got badly lost.
Annual Birdsong Walk:
On a Thursday evening in late April or early May. One of our members has a keen ear for birdsong and leads us around the Isabella plantation in Richmond Park identifying the birds. The walk is followed by a pub supper
Away weekend:
The third weekend in May is a walking weekend – usually about 3-4 hours travel from London. In recent years we have been to North Norfolk, Hebdon Bridge, Lynton and Presteigne . This year we plan to visit Shaftesbury. We stay in hotels or bed and breakfasts and walk each day. Non walking partners are welcome – there is usually golf, Stately Homes, garden visits etc. The annual dinner is held on the Saturday night.
SOCIAL EVENTS
There is usually a party in late January in the house of a member, with a drinks party and AGM in the autumn
