Windsor
It was with some trepidation that I the leader set out on this walk. The day before we had to revise the morning route due to severe flooding along the Thames Path and we did not know if the fall back walk would work
However the gods were smiling on us. 19 valiant souls and Dotty (the dog) met at Windsor Station and marched firmly up through the town which was looking delightful and peaceful in the winter light. From there we entered the park and walked up the Long Walk before reeling left to exit the park and descend to the river. There we all paused to ponder the awesome sight of the flooded mighty Thames swirling its way to the sea. A short walk took us up through the John F Kennedy Memorial from where we got views of the flooded waste lands of west London and on to lunch
The pub was excellent providing food in a swift and efficient manner allowing us to continue with some chance of catching the 4 o'clock train home. A wander through Windsor Great Park brought us back to the top of the Long Walk with the castle and the countryside splendid in front of us. Gasps of 'don't be silly its not 3 miles to the castle is it?' With the answer in the affirmative most of the group elected to 'leg it' in order to catch the train And I am delighted to report that everyone achieved the task some spurred on by fellow members and the possible threat of setting Dotty on the train driver if he left without her
This left the slower members to amble home in the sunshine, with wonderful sunsets to study feeling much better for the first good leg stretch of 2014.
Train is a very easy option The train leaves Waterloo 8.44 am Clapham Junction 8.54 am and Richmond 9.10am arriving Windsor and Eton Riverside 9.44am
For those happier with driving there is a large station car park that charges £2 a day
Return trains every hour on the hour
Update Due to flooding the route may need to be amended
We take the Thames Path from Windsor towards Runnymede then walk uphill (gently) through the John Kennedy Memorial to Engelfield Green for lunch. After lunch we enter Windsor Great Park and walk to the highest point for wonderful views before taking the Long Walk down to Windsor and the train home
The Sun Engelfield Green Sandwiches or Roast of the day No sopup
Dogs welcome Wipe mud off boots before entering
This is in the main a flat walk, minimal mud and no stiles
